I suppose that I'm one of those "softies" referred to in his address to these students. Music is such a large part of my life, maybe bigger than just about any part. I can't remember the last day that I didn't listen to some kind of music.

I have experienced the power of music to reconnect me with emotions that I didn't realize were inside me. It has helped me to relieve the pressure of the saddest times in my life and made the best times reach new heights.

Music has inspired my own artistic pursuits and helped me realize their importance to me and really the world.

Reading this article brought to mind the most poignant moment in my life as a photographer and I would like to share it here. Last summer at Toronto's first Nautical Festival, I was about to go home at the end of a long day. I spotted a father playing with his infant son on the lawn. They wore matching t-shirts and the evening light was beautiful. Dad was lying on the grass holding his son in the air and they were both clearly having a great time. I took several photos.

A few minutes later, I approached them and told them I took photos he asked me to send copies. I did, and what happened a week later made me feel so privileged to have captured those moments. "Dad" told me that he and his wife we so grateful to have those pictures because the dad had just been diagnosed with arthritis and wouldn't be able to hold his son like that within a year - a powerful moment that showed me the value of my gift.
